The Estuaryย Englishย accentย is a mixture of Received Pronunciation, or RP, and theย cockneyย accent, which originated in East London.ย

Here are someย commonย expressions inย informal versions of Estuary English. These expressions areย alsoย common in other accents of English, including American accents,ย  Scottish accents, Irish accents and more!

Wannaย (informal)

Note:ย This is for spoken English only,ย not for written English.

Meaning 1:ย We sometimes say โ€˜wannaโ€™ instead of โ€˜want toโ€™ inย fast or informalย English.ย

Examples:ย 1.ย Dโ€™youย wannaย play football later?ย (note: this means โ€˜Doย you want to play football later?โ€™)

2.ย Do youย wannaย go to the beach?ย (note: this means โ€˜Do you want to go to the beach?โ€™)

3.ย Do youย wannaย see a film tomorrow?ย ย (note: this means โ€˜Do you want to see a filmย tomorrow?)
ย

Meaning 2:ย We sometimes say โ€˜wannaโ€™ instead of โ€˜want aโ€™ in informal speech.

Examples:ย Iย wannaย coffee. Shall we go to a cafรฉ?ย (note: this means โ€˜I want a coffeeโ€™. In this sentence, โ€˜a coffeeโ€™ meansย โ€˜ aย cup of coffeeโ€™.)
ย

Inย very informalย English, the sentences can be even shorter!ย In the next examples, only โ€˜Wannaโ€ฆ?โ€™ is used, instead of โ€˜Do youย wannaโ€ฆ?โ€™ This is incorrect, slang English, but you will hear native speakers all over the world speak like this!

Examples: 1. Wanna see a film later?  (note: this means โ€˜Do you want to see a film later?โ€™)

2. Wanna coffee?  (note: this means โ€˜Do you want a coffee?โ€™)

In the examples above, the questions words โ€˜Do youโ€ฆ?โ€™ are often pronounced /สค/This is the same sound that we find at the beginning and end of the word โ€˜judgeโ€™, and also, at the start of my name, Jane.

Listen to these examples:

Do youย wannaย have some dinner?ย (note:ย this means โ€˜do you want to have some dinnerโ€™)

Do youย wannaย read this book?ย ย ย (note:ย this means โ€˜do you want to read this book?โ€™)

Do youย wannaย game of tennis?ย ย (note:ย this means โ€˜do you wantย a game of tennis?โ€™)

Another common expression that is widely used by speakers withย Cockney accents,ย Estuaryย Englishย accents and many more accents ofย Englishย isโ€ฆ

Gonnaย (informal)

Note:ย This is for spoken English only,ย not for written English.

Meaning:ย Weย oftenย use โ€˜gonnaโ€™ instead of โ€˜going toโ€™ in informal speech.ย

Examples:ย 1.ย Whatย are youย gonnaย do about it?ย (note: this meansย โ€˜What are you going to do about it?โ€™)

2.ย Is heย gonnaย call you?ย (note: this meansย โ€˜Is he going to call you?โ€™)

3.ย Iโ€™ve decided Iโ€™mย gonnaย improve my Englishย this year!ย (note: thisย meansย โ€˜Iโ€™ve decided Iโ€™m going toย improve my English this year!โ€™)

In very informal English, we sometimes begin sentences withย โ€˜gonnaโ€™!ย In the next examples, only โ€˜Gonnaโ€ฆ?โ€™ is used, instead of โ€˜Are you going toโ€ฆ?โ€™ This is incorrect, slang English, butย it is used all over the world.

Examples:ย 1.ย Gonnaย call him or not?ย (note: this meansย โ€˜Are you going to call him or not?โ€™)

2.ย Gonnaย tryย this ?ย (note: this meansย โ€˜Are you going toย try this?โ€™)

Remember, these words are very informal. But you will hear them a lot, and they are veryย importantย for understanding nativeย Englishย speakers!
