IT’S JUST AS WELL and IT’S A GOOD JOB

Meaning:

 If we say
It is JUST AS WELL that we did something or
It is A GOOD JOB that we did it
we mean that it was a good thing to do, or it was a lucky thing to do

So these two idioms mean the same thing. Listen to these examples, paying particular attention to the sentence stress.

Example 1:

It’s just as well they left at five o’clock or they would have missed their flight.

It’s a good job they left at five o’clock or they would have missed their flight.

note: Both of these sentences mean “It was lucky that they left at five o’clock, because if they had not left at that time, they would have missed their flight!”

We can also say it another way:

They left at five o’clock, which was just as well or they would have missed their flight.

note: It is not incorrect to say They left at five o’clock, which was a good job or they would have missed their flight.” But the idiom IT’S A GOOD JOB is usually at the start of a sentence.

Example 2:

It’s just as well he did not come with us to the beach, because he hates sand!

It’s a good job he did not come with us to the beach, because he hates sand!

He did not come with us to the beach, which was just as well because he hates sand!

note: these sentences all mean “It is a good thing that he did not come to the beach, because he hates sand!”

Now, try to write your own sentences using IT’S JUST AS WELL and IT’S A GOOD JOB.

Make sure they are true to your own life if possible because this will help you to remember them better. That is all for Audio Word Study #093on DailyStep.com.
