IELTS Speaking Test Part 2: Describe a holiday

How can you describe a holiday for an IELTS Speaking Test?

IELTS Speaking Test PART 2 Sample Question and Answer

by Jane Lawson at DailyStep.com

Question: Describe a holiday you recently had.

You should say:

  • where you went
  • how you got there
  • what you did there
  • and explain if you enjoyed it .

Answer:
I have just returned from a 2-week holiday with my husband Brendan in Northern Italy.

We stayed most of the time in a beautiful village called Cesiomaggiore, in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains.

Then we spent the last few nights in a very picturesque and historic town called Belluno.

We travelled to Italy by air, although we had considered driving there from the UK before deciding against it.

We flew from London Gatwick to Venice, then once we got to Venice airport, we hired a car so that we could drive into the mountains. We got a bit lost on the way as the roads were very unfamiliar.

We had such a relaxing time on our holiday.  Some Italian friends of ours live in the village where we stayed, and they were having a birthday party on the third night of our holiday, so we enjoyed some wonderful Italian food and company.

It was great to meet my friend Laura’s Italian friends, many of whom live in the nearby town of Feltre.

The main activities we enjoyed on holiday were walking and swimming.

We went hiking in the mountains nearly every day, which was very good for our fitness, and spent some lovely evenings in restaurants eating Italian food, which is one of my favourite cuisines.

I really enjoyed this holiday, possibly even more so because I had been working so hard and moving house just before we went away.

I loved the fresh air and the scenery, and of course the food. One of my favourite things to do on the holiday was go swimming in one of the many lakes in the area.

The water is so fresh and clean, and the temperature is just refreshing – not too hot and not too cold.

I will certainly be going back there another year, as I think it’s one of my favourite parts of the world.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.

Now, try this yourself, and if possible record your answer so you can listen back to it.
