Meanings of GET in English

Harry gets it wrong again
by Jane Lawson at DailyStep.com

Poor Harry! He always gets it wrong, no matter what he does. Last Wednesday was no different. Let me tell you what happened…

Harry had finally managed to get Amanda, a girl from work, to meet him for a coffee, after weeks of trying to get the courage to ask her out.

He got to the café early, so that he could get the best table– somewhere quiet where they would not get disturbed by other customers.

When Amanda arrived, she got a surprise to see Harry there on his own, as she was also expecting other people from the office.

In fact, she got rather annoyed when she heard that no-one else was coming, but she decided to stay for a coffee anyway.

She started telling Harry that she had got the bus to the café, and when she was getting off the bus, her bag had got caught in the door and the bus driver had shouted at her. “It really gets me” she said “how some people are so rude – I mean, it wasn’t my fault!”

Just as she was getting to the end of her story, Harry suddenly l started getting very hot and sweaty, and realised with horror that he was just about to get sick! “Oh no, I’m getting food poisoning” he thought, remembering the 4-day old sausages he had eaten for breakfast.

Without a word, he ran from the table, leaving Amanda to get the bill

In this story about poor Harry, the verb GET was used in 16 different ways! GET has very many meanings in English.

I think the best way to learn these meanings is through stories, because that way you learn them in context and can write your own examples.

By the way, in the picture, GET IT? means DO YOU UNDERSTAND IT?   Now, here is the story again, this time with other verbs instead of GET.

Poor Harry! He always does things in the wrong way. Last Wednesday was no different. Let me tell you what happened…

Harry had finally managed to persuade Amanda, a girl from work, to meet him for a coffee, after weeks of trying to find the courage to ask her on a date.

He arrived at the café early, so that he could obtain the best table – somewhere quiet where they would not be disturbed by other customers.

When Amanda arrived, she received a surprise to see Harry there on his own, as she was also expecting other people from the office. In fact, she became rather annoyed when she heard that no-one else was coming, but she decided to stay for a coffee anyway.

She started telling Harry that she had taken the bus to the café, and when she was alighting from the bus, her bag had accidentally become caught in the door and the bus driver had shouted at her. “It really annoys me” she said “how some people are so rude – I mean, it wasn’t my fault!”

Just as she was reaching the end of her story, Harry suddenly started becoming very hot and sweaty, and realised with horror that he was just about to vomit! “Oh no, I’m becoming ill with food poisoning” he thought, remembering the 4-day old sausages he had eaten for breakfast.

Without a word, he ran from the table, leaving Amanda to pay the bill.

The story without the verb GET sounds more formal because we use GET a lot more in informal English.

Now, try to write your own sentences using these different meanings of GET. Try to make sure they are true to your own life if possible, as this will help you to remember them better.
