IELTS Speaking Test PART 2 Sample Question and Answer, by Jane Lawson at DailyStep.com

Question: Describe an area of countryside you know and like.

You should say:
  • Where it is
  • What its special features are
  • What you and other people do in this area
  • And explain why you like it

Answer:
One of my favourite areas of countryside is called The Lake District, in Cumbria, a county in the North West of England. It’s famous for its natural beauty, and its most special features, as the name implies, are its huge lakes. These are quite unusual because they are long and relatively narrow.  The rolling hills around the lakes are also incredibly beautiful, especially the way they catch the light as it is breaks through the clouds. The landscape of the Lake District was formed over millions of years, first by volcanoes and then in the Ice Age, by glaciers that moved slowly through the mountains carving deep valleys.

The main pastimes in the Lake District are outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, sailing, kayaking and so on. In fine weather, you really can’t beat a long hike in that amazing countryside as far as I’m concerned. The area is a National Park, so there are plenty of maps showing good routes. For the more adventurous, there is mountain climbing, though the mountains are not that high compared to others in the world. Those who prefer a more relaxing holiday can spend their time just sitting and admiring the stunning scenery. The weather does tend to be quite wet during autumn and winter, but that is a good excuse to rest inside the many traditional pubs or cafes, which often have open fires.

One of the main reasons I love the Lake District is that is a feast for all the senses. My eyes can admire the scenery, I can listen to the birdsong, breathe and smell the fresh air, feel the cool breeze or warm sunshine, and taste the delicious local food and drink. I also like the fact that it is so remote, far away from the city where I live, so I can really get away from it all, unwind and re-charge my batteries.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.   Now, try it yourself – look at the language I have used here and speak about an area of countryside that you know and like.
