IELTS Speaking Test PART 2 Sample Question and Answer

by Jane Lawson at

Question: Describe a public park you visit. You should say:

  • where the park is
  • how often you go there
  • what people do there
  • and say how important public parks are

IELTS Speaking Test - Describe a public parkAnswer:  The nearest park to where I live is Brockwell Park in south London. I don't go there as often as I would like to, but I suppose I tend to visit it a few times a month. If it were a little bit nearer to my house I guess I would go there more often, but it's around a 25-minute walk away or 10 minutes on the bus.

People do all kinds of things in Brockwell Park. It's a large park with many different areas, all suited to different age groups and interests. There are large areas of grass where people play football, cricket and other sports, or just have picnics and relax.

At the top of the hill in the park, there is a beautiful old house which is now a cafe where you can have afternoon tea, ice creams on a hot day and so on. There are tennis courts where people can play tennis as long as they book in advance, and an old walled garden, which used to be part of the main house. It’s a great place for just sitting and contemplating while looking at the beautiful flowers. There is also, over the other side of the hill, a children's paddling pool where families can safely take their kids to cool down in the height of summer. For adults, there is a bigger outdoor swimming pool, which gets very crowded.

It's hard to overstate how important parks are when you live in a city. Even though is quite some way from my house, just knowing it is there means a lot to me. Getting back to nature, sitting on the grass, being able to see some distance without your view being interrupted by buildings and being able to run around or just relax outside is essential for human beings. And for wild animals living in the city, such as birds, squirrels, foxes and so on, parks give them a taste of the wild at night, after the gates are closed to humans.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.  Now, try this yourself, and if possible record your answer so you can listen back to it.

What is a DailyStep English Audio Lesson?

How does a DailyStep subscription work?

DailyStep Audio lessons make you speak English like a native speaker for a short time each day, and help you to understand native speakers perfectly.
If you subscribe to my regular DailyStep audio lessons, I will send you 5 expertly- designed audio lessons per week, so every month you get approximately 22 lessons per level. You choose the level yourself that you think will be challenging for you - not too easy, not too hard - and you can change your level, or add more levels, at any time after joining.

  • Each weekday (Monday to Friday), you receive an email containing a link that takes you straight to your audio lesson.

  • Each audio lesson contains a short conversation, with an audio file and script, as well as vocabulary and style notes to help you understand it.

  • Key phrases in the conversation are hidden at first so you can test your listening skills. You can then uncover the hidden text.

  • There are 2 audio files per lesson – one at fast, natural speed and a second audio file that is slowed down using special software to 65% of natural speed. This allows you to hear exactly how the language works.

  • You copy the native speakers by speaking along with the audio files to improve your pronunciation, rhythm, speed and intonation.

  • All your lessons are stored for you in an online Personal Lesson Bank so you can log in to take them again any time, or take lessons you have missed – even after your subscription has expired!

  • You can download the MP3 audio files to your computer, mobile phone or i-pod.

  • The lessons take only 5 - 10 minutes each day to complete, and you can log in and take your lessons from any computer.

  • There are no advertisements to distract your attention.
