English Idioms About Brexit

Hello, I’m Jane at DailyStep English and Welcome to my Audio Blog.

Thank you to Sabine in France for this very topical question, as she asked me for my views on Brexit, which means British Exit from the European Union (the EU).

As you may know, last week there was a referendum in the UK on whether the UK should leave the EU. The result of the referendum was close, with 52% voting to leave and 48% voting to remain in the EU.

I voted to remain, and like so many British people, I am still in shock at the referendum result. This topic is too huge to cover in one blog, so for now here are 3 idioms that sum up how I feel about the vote to leave.

1. A LEAP IN THE DARK means “something you do without knowing what will happen as a result.”

Example:
Leaving the EU will be a leap in the dark for the UK and is likely to cause years of economic, political and social turmoil.

2. OUT OF THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE means to “move from a difficult situation to one that is much worse.

Example:
Many people are dissatisfied with some aspects of the EU, but the best way forward is to continue cooperating, and to press for reform as a member of the EU. Leaving the EU altogether is just out of the frying pan into the fire.

3. YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT means “you cannot have the benefits of something without some sacrifice or cost. “

Example:
British “Vote Leave” campaigners want to have their cake and eat it. They say that Britain can have all the benefits of EU membership without any of the responsibilities. They lied to the voters and unfortunately too many people believed them.  I’ll be on the Pro-Europe protest march in London this Saturday 2nd July as we hope we can stop Brexit.

It’s a good idea to say and write your own examples of these 3 idioms as this will help you to remember them better. If you are new to DailyStep, you can get 5 free UK/USA lessons here.
